Oi ! is a six-phase installation evolving in one window space over the duration of Radiant Pavilion.

Using objects not words, Melbourne makers Sam Mertens and Liv Boyle attempt to seed discussion with passers by – suits, tourists, shoppers, tradies, jewellers, hipsters, students, drifters.

Ranging from climate change to cornichons, each of the daily installations represents one comment distilled from many conversations had over the workshop bench. Playing with concerns specific to contemporary practice, this project brings some of those conversations to the street.

About the Artists

Liv Boyle is an emerging New Zealand jeweller living and making in Melbourne. An interest in the body, with a background in sculpture and textiles, informs Boyle’s work intuitively. Certainly also, a rich cultural upbringing on the North Island’s East Coast has instilled a respect and appreciation for natural resources and their ability to speak for themselves.
Through connections to the land and it’s stories, materials are also an intuitive choice, if not an autobiographical one – paired with precious metals, sustainable organics such as bone and horn form part of a conversation around both existing and traditional value systems.

Sam Mertens is an emerging contemporary silversmith and jeweller, based at Workshop 3000 in Melbourne. Sam keeps up his own practice, works for Susan Cohn as an artist assistant and is a technician at RMIT University in the Gold and Silversmithing department. Sam makes both jewellery and objects, these two practices often play off one another. His work is currently focused on the examination of how light interacts with his work. Sam does this by carefully selecting his materials and surface finish in conjunction with acknowledging how people will touch, feel and interact with his work. http://www.sammertens.com
