…Makin’ it is a series of observational documentaries by Mark Newbound, running on a loop and projected onto a Melbourne laneway wall

Each documentary depicts a local jewellery artist making a piece from beginning to end. No words are exchanged, the only sounds are those produced by the making process.

(ABOUT THE ARTISTS)

Michelle Cangiano lives and works in Melbourne. Her practice is informed by her Fine Art background, where she studied the formal elements of design. Line, form, colour, positive and negative space are integral and considered components of each piece. Michelle incorporates these elements with traditional jewellery making techniques to produce contemporary jewellery that embraces the meeting of the traditional with the unconventional.

Anna Davern gained her undergraduate degree from Sydney College of the Arts in 1993 and completed her Masters degree at RMIT in 2003. Davern has held three solo exhibitions at Craft Victoria and has been represented in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In 2011 she co-founded Northcity4, an ARI that provides professional and creative opportunities to the contemporary jewellery community. She has been the recipient of grants from the Australia Council, Arts Victoria and NAVA and in 2007 she undertook a residency at the Estonian Academy of Art. Davern has taught and lectured at universities and TAFEs in Australia and overseas.

Vicki Mason completed two undergraduate degrees before being awarded a Master of Philosophy degree (Research) in Gold and Silversmithing from ANU in 2012. She runs production and exhibition practices, teaches, and has been awarded many grants and awards including the prestigious Australia Council for the Arts Barcelona Studio residency. Her work is held in both public and private collections including the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, Shanghai, Powerhouse Museum, Sydney and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Vicki interviews for Art Jewelry Forum and is on the board of the World Crafts Council – Australia.

Melbourne based jeweller, Rhys Turner draws inspiration from geometric forms and clean lines often seen in Minimalist Architecture. He creates pieces that are paired-back to their necessary elements to draw focus on the connection between contemporary jewellery design and traditional materials and techniques. Completing his BA(Jewellery) at CSU in 2006, Rhys went on to work in Canberra and Melbourne, developing a broad technical skillset, and in 2014 was awarded the Australian Jeweller of the Year. Since co-founding Melbourne studio FiveTwelve in 2016, Rhys focuses private commissions and gallery collections both incorporating a strong emphasis on the handmade.
