Line/Wrap/Rhythm is a complimentary and thematically interconnected collection of work by established Adelaide contemporary jewellers Jane Bowden and Leslie Matthews. Jane’s pieces articulate the delicate intensity of the wrapped line that has been transformed with enfolded tension in titanium and sterling silver wire, while Leslie’s gestural marks have been subtly embossed in porcelain and sterling silver. These diverse materials are consciously placed together and provide an energy and visual tension to the collection. Both artists produce work that conveys a response to the warp and weft of fabric, while reflecting the repetition and rhythm of their making processes. This intimate collection displayed within the beautifully evocative, bespoke fashion gallery, E.S.S-LABORATORY, offers the viewer a quiet space to contemplate the complex subtlety of their contemporary jewellery pieces.

(ABOUT THE ARTISTS)
Jane Bowden knew she wanted to be a jeweller after purchasing her first sterling silver ring aged 11. In 1990 she graduated from the University of South Australia, completing a Bachelor of Design, majoring in jewellery and metalsmithing. In 1992 Jane established “The Gold Fish Studio” with fellow graduates located in Dulwich before moving to the JamFactory from 1995 – 1997. Here she began to experiment with the textile techniques in metal that would later become an important part of her making. In 1997 Zu design - jewellery + objects was established and Jane is now the proprietor. Her passion for making continues. Leslie Matthews’ arts practice extends over 32 years, primarily as a contemporary jeweller, and has been involved in many local, national and international exhibitions. She has undertaken several international residencies, including The British School at Rome, Japan/South Australia Cultural Exchange, Barcelona Residency, Australia Council. Currently Leslie is a PhD Candidate, within the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of South Australia.
