Illuminate will shine a light on a collection of neckpieces by a selected group of 15 artists. Participating artists will use the format of neckpieces from which to explore the continuum of their individual practices.
The collection will be exhibited at Studio Ingot comprising of more than thirty new works.

About the Artists

Anna Davern gained her undergraduate degree from Sydney College of the Arts in 1993 and completed her Master’s degree at RMIT in 2003.
Davern has held three solo exhibitions at Craft Victoria and has been represented in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In 2011 she co-founded Northcity4, an ARI that provides professional and creative opportunities to the contemporary jewellery community.
She has been the recipient of grants from the Australia Council, Arts Victoria and NAVA and in 2007 she undertook a residency at the Estonian Academy of Art. Davern has taught and lectured at universities and TAFEs in Australia and overseas.


Belinda Newick is a jeweller and metal smith, whose work explores cultural hybridity, diversity and place. Since graduating from Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia in 1995, Newick spent six years in South Australia at JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design, Gray Street Workshop and Zu Design. Newick now lives in Melbourne and has been a sessional lecturer at Melbourne Polytechnic for eight years.
Newick's practice as a studio based jeweller is a balance of exhibition, production and commission jewellery, objects and design. Through her work Newick explores aspects of language, which translates as details of surface texture on gold and silver. She combines hand-crafted traditional techniques and computer engraving processes. Her interest in linguistics and epigraphic collections informs the inclusion of text. Her objects and jewellery capture the emotions, imprints and memories of her life journey through the subtle surface techniques applied to her work.
Newick has been the recipient of two international grants, with an AsiaLink Residency; Sri Lanka 2004 and another in Kerala, India 2001. She has exhibited in Asia, New Zealand and the USA and maintains an exhibition and gallery profile in Australia and overseas.


Bin Dixon-Ward: A graduate of RMIT, Gold and Silversmithing, Bin has exhibited in Europe and North America and is the recipient of several awards for her jewellery. Recent exhibitions include, Melbourne Now, Schmuck, A Fine Possession at the Powerhouse Museum and most recently her solo exhibition GRIDS at Craft Victoria. Her work is held in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, The Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, and Musee des Artes Decoritifs, (The Louvre)Paris. Bin is currently undertaking a PhD by project at RMIT. Her topic explores the urban grid through jewellery and small objects.


Brendan Adair-Smith trained at the University of South Australia and as a Design Associate at Jam Factory before moving to Melbourne in 2002. Brendan currently works at Studio Ingot as a member of the workshop and Gallery.
Brendan produces both one-off jewellery pieces and larger scale exhibition work and has exhibited as both a solo exhibitor and in multiple group shows. Recent exhibitions include, A fine Possession at the Powerhouse Museum, 2014 and Twelve Degrees of Latitude, regional and university galleries QLD.
In 2007 Brendan was awarded first prize at Contemporary Wearables Biennial Jewellery Award & Exhibition and second prize in 2011.
His work has been acquired by Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery in 2001, 2007, 2009 and 2011.


Jennifer Martin has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Gold and Silversmithing from RMIT University as well as a Masters of Fine Art. She has been making jewellery professionally and as an artistic practice for 15 years. Her work explores the traces of narrative found in the forest, the sea and the sky. Her jewellery reflects upon the spiritual connection we have with each other, human, animal, avian, aquatic, celestial and mineral.


Katheryn Leopoldseder is an internationally-recognized contemporary jeweller and artist. She produces limited-edition handmade jewellery pieces as well as large-scale objets d’art. In both forms, her work reflects on the sacredness of life and the multiple connections between the human body and the natural world.
Since graduating with honours from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Katheryn has become a founding member of Melbourne's Abbotsford Convent arts and cultural precinct. She is the recipient of several awards, grants and acquisitions, with work also represented within the collection of The Powerhouse Museum, NSW.


Leonie Westbrook completed a Bachelor of Applied Arts from University of South Australia and was an Associate at Jam Factory where she had a solo exhibition Relics in 2010.
Following this Leonie was awarded an Arts SA Project grant for research and development whilst a tenant at the renowned Gray Street Workshop. Leonie exhibited in Two ways in 2013 and will exhibit in Theatre of Detail and participate in the Calendar Girls project in 2015 and 2016 for Gray Street Workshop’s 30 year anniversary program. 


Linda Hughes lives and works in Melbourne and has a BA, Fine Art (Honours) and a MA, Fine Art from RMIT University where she is currently completing a PhD.
Linda has participated in group exhibitions internationally and solo exhibitions: The Obscure Stripe, 2013, Galerie Biro, Germany, Metonymy – Look Both Ways, 2010, Jam Factory, Adelaide, and Craft Victoria, Melbourne. Shared Zone 2007, Studio Ingot, Melbourne, Australia. In 2005 Linda received the Toowoomba Contemporary Wearables Award and The Filippo Raphael Fresh Award. In 2011 she received a New Work Grant from the Australia Council of the Arts and several academic and travel scholarships.
Linda has work in public collections including: National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Art Gallery of South Australia, SA. Aust., The Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, France, Toowoomba Art Gallery, Qld., Aust.


Michelle Cangiano lives and works in Melbourne. Completing a Fine Art Degree in Painting and Drawing, she went on to study Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT. Michelle graduated with High Distinctions in 2001 and in the same year was an award winner at Fresh! Craft Victoria.
From 2002-10 she lectured in the School of Art, Gold and Silversmithing RMIT. Participating in numerous group shows since graduating, Michelle had her first solo show in 2007 at Pieces of Eight Gallery.

Nicky Hepburn completed Gold and Silversmithing, at RMIT and a Bachelor of Education in Arts and Crafts, at the University of Melbourne. She has also lectured in Jewellery and Metalsmithing for over 15 years.
She has been involved in numerous group, solo and international exhibitions including, 2012-‘ Forces of Nature’ at the Australian Embassy, Washington DC, 2009 - the ‘Walk’, a NETS touring exhibition.
Nicky exhibits regularly at e.g.etal Gallery, Studio Ingot, and Pieces of Eight in Melbourne. Nicky’s practice is focused on investigating the natural environment,based on her response to the details, light, colour and forms of the landscape.

Pennie Jagiello is a current final year candidate in the Masters of Fine Art practice based research at RMIT following a Bachelor of Fine Art Sculpture at VCA in 1995. She is currently part of a residency in the Pilbara with FORM Gallery, which will see her research expand across three expeditions as part of an extensive project that will tour across Australia in 2015-2016. Pennie is currently represented by 6 galleries, held numerous solo and group exhibitions around Australia. In 2004 Pennie was the recipient of the Australia Council Crafts Mentorship, and has been a selected entrant in various jewellery award exhibitions. She has run workshops throughout Australia during her practice, and represented Australia at the Waste to Wealth Festival in Kuwait City in 2013.


Robin Wells graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Curtin University in Western Australia and after moving to Melbourne completed her Certificate IV in Gemological studies.
Robin has a vital production practice, represented by leading Gallery’s around Australia including, Beaver Gallery, Studio Ingot, Aspects of Kings Park, in addition to making one-off works for exhibition. Robin has exhibited widely, recent exhibitions include “A Year in the making” Breathing Colors Gallery Sydney 2015.Robin was selected to be part of Tinker, soldier, sailor that toured nationally in 2014.
In addition to her own practice she has worked as both a gallerist and jeweller.


Sarah Jane Ross completed her Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT. Following with her honours degree she commenced lecturing at RMIT for more than a decade. She has given workshops, guest lectures and classes both nationally and internationally.
Sarah is a founding Director at Studio Ingot and divides her time between the Gallery, limited edition jewellery pieces, custom orders and larger scale sculpture.
She has been represented both nationally and internationally in numerous exhibitions.
Sarah awards include a residency at Hill End, a highly commended at Itami, an Honourable Prize at the 3rd International jewellery design competition, Tokyo, and the Jewellery Association of Australia’s Platinum Jewellery design Award. She recently awarded a large-scale sculptural (8m) commission for a library.


Vicki Mason (born New Zealand) obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Otago University (Classical Studies) and a Diploma in Craft Design from Otago 
Polytechnic School of Art (Jewellery) in New Zealand before working at Fluxus jewellery workshop/gallery. Currently living in Melbourne, 
Mason completed a Master of Philosophy degree (Research) in Gold and Silversmithing at the ANU in 2012. She runs a production practice, makes one-off works for exhibition and teaches. She has been awarded various prizes and grants, most recently from the Australia Council for the Arts in 2014. Her work is held in both public and private collections.


Yu-Fang, Chi completed her Bachelor and Master degree in Taiwan. She is a current PhD candidate within the School of Art at RMIT. Her research project investigates the concept of femininity in jewellery and objects and its cultural connotations. Based on the theories of gender study, Yu-Fang introspects the processes of creation and the position of female body. Her practice involves repetitive fibre-related techniques using synthetic fibre which can be connected to traditional domestic art processes.
